Ian McShane's Winston, introduced in the first film of the action-packed Keanu Reeves-led trilogy, becomes a significant figure throughout the series, and in fact is the man with the strongest link to the enigmatic Wick. 

However, various hints scattered throughout the films have convinced some that Winston and Wick's relationship goes beyond friendship, leading to the belief that McShane's character is Reeves' father-in-law.'

Whether Winston and John are more closely connected than appears is a question that John Wick series director Stahelski is unwilling to answer definitively, 

but he is aware of the father-in-law theory and believes it is a decent one. Stahelski addressed the hypothesis in an interview with Collider,
